January 2006 The Band website as suffered a blow this week, due to accidentely deleting Files off the server. In other words I am having to more or less start from scratch building each page again. Hopefully it won't take too long though and some new photo's will be added of the Richard Marshall evening on the 1st Feb.
The Band's Annual General Meeting takes place on Thursday 23 Feb. at 7.30 pm. February 8th Richard Marshall gave a Master class at our Bandroom on the 1st February. Everybody enjoyed the evening, with something for everyone, from the Beginners to more advanced players. The two hour class involved Breathing technique, warming up and note production amongst other playing skills, Richard also did not get away from us without a demonstration of his playing ability. In an e-mail received from Richard today, he commented on how he thoroughly enjoyed the evening and would be happy to arrange another visit in the future.
Phil Hallworth with Richard Marshall March/April. March seems to have flown by with not much to report, or was it because I was on Holiday? Anyway, as I write this, Easter is nearly upon us and talking of holidays, it seems quite a few of the Band this year have chosen this time of year to go away, or more to the point their parents have, Band practice's lately have been down in numbers, including a few missing practice for the forthcoming Co-op Music Festival. June/July. Friday 9 June - Whit Friday Marches. Worsborough Brass have not been over to Saddleworth to take part in this event for a number of years, but for those who are not familiar with the day, it is an annual event held in Saddleworth and Tameside, and the format for the evening event is as follows - Leave the Band room at 4.00pm prompt, the coach will take a planned route to include the villages which hold contests in the Saddleworth area. Each village organises their own contest, and we are hopeful of performing at 6 of these events in total (if we are lucky). The Band as to march a short distance, playing a March of course, to a marked off arena where the Band then performs another March while standing. There is an adjudicator at each venue and Bands are marked on deportment, as well as musical performance. This event is quite an experience and hopefully an enjoyable one for everybody. There will be seats on the coach for family and friends, but again it will be first come, first served. Sunday 11 June - Worsbrough Mill Children's Day. This is one of the events which we are asked to be involved in as part of our support to Worsbrough Mill and Country Park, in return for the privilege of having our premises within the Country Park. I don't have any times at the moment, this will be passed on nearer the time.
Saturday 1 July - Yes we agreed to do 2 venues on the same day, but, Tankersley and Wortley are neighbouring villages and we have only been asked to perform at Tankersley for 45 minutes. It should be no problem moving on to Wortley Hall to do 2 x 20 minute performances between 2.45 and 4.30pm. Please realise that each event swells the Band funds! Sunday 2 July - Brodsworth Hall.
This will be our 3rd or 4th visit to Brodsworth Hall, Doncaster. It is another outdoor event, but this time we are expected to provide a full concert programme of 2x 45 minute spots between 3 and 5pm. I do have entrance tickets for Band members and their families. Each Band member receives a ticket for free entry into the House and grounds. Visitors tickets allow access to the grounds only. Visitors please note, it is advisable to take your own seating as there is non provided. The majority of the audience are regular visitors to the summer concerts and go well prepared with seats and picnics, although food is provided within the Hall cafe. Band members are provided with drinks at the interval. The weather is usually kind to us, but should it be wet, the organisers may cancel the concert, it is their decision not ours and unless instructed from Brodsworth Hall not to perform, we would be expected to arrive ready to perform.
Saturday 8 July - Old Silkstone March Contest. This again as become an annual event similar to the Whit Friday March Contest, where there will be a maximum of 20 Bands competing at two venues, starting at the Red Lion pub playing a March and a Hymn, followed by the March down the High Street to the final performance, again playing a March and a Hymn at the Silkstone Lodge Pub. The result of the Contest is announced at Silkstone Lodge at approximately 10.00pm. This is another very enjoyable evening for both players and families with food available and usually a few Championship Bands performing on the day.
Saturday 15 July - Angram Bank Recreation Ground, High Green. We have been asked to share this event with High Green Band, the event is being organised by Angram Bank tenants association and the theme for the day is "Bands and Blooms". Participating organisations include Stocksbridge TARA Flower show, Kier, KeepMoat, Graves Park Animal Farm and Ecclesfield Parish Council plus other local businesses. The organisers are hopeful that the event will be featured in the local media such as, Calendar, The Star and Look Local! ![]()
