Hi. I’m Jenny. I am fourteen years old and a member of Worsbrough Brass Band. I started playing cornet at school at the age of seven with no musical experience at all. I learnt the basics of reading music and which end of the instrument to blow down, and was soon introduced to the band. At first, like anywhere, I was nervous about meeting new people however within weeks, I competed with the band at the Cooperative music festival in Barnsley as their youngest member.

During the seven years I have been with the band, I have made tonnes of friends of all age groups and it has become a very important part of my life. We have played in lots of places including Scarborough, Ripon Cathedral, and Brodsworth hall as well as doing a lot for the local community, switching the lights on at Ward Green community centre and raised a lot of money for charities such as Bluebell Wood and the Tsunami Appeal. Worsbrough Brass is primarily a youth band and takes on players of all standards from their first note to the end of their first year. It is important that the band feels like one big family so lots of social events are organised for the members. Last year the band visited Blackpool for a day out and also gets treated to a Pantomime every year. It’s behind you! Whilst I have been at the band, they celebrated their 10-year Anniversary in 2003, which I was honoured to be a part of. I have moved up the ranks from 3rd cornet all the way to solo cornet as I progressed and during that time I have seen lots of members leave for bigger and better things, some of them even going on to play for Grimethorpe and Black Dyke. Many people may leave but new members are coming in all the time and we always do our best to make them feel welcome and that they get the most out of playing with us.

I now play Solo Horn with the band and am enjoying it as much as I did when I first joined. Playing with the band has opened up so many windows and I am now taking music GCSE at school. I am also part of the school Wind Band and Choir, which I would never have thought of doing in a million years if I hadn’t joined the band.

We already have a busy schedule for 2007, which involve playing on the bandstand at Beamish, playing for the Lord Mayor and entering the Cooperative festival once more. It would be lovely if you came along to listen to us at some of our upcoming events as you are always welcome and it would be even better if you considered joining. Hope to see you soon!
