Phil's playing career started at the age of 8, learning and playing with "Birdwell Silver Prize Band"

Progressing from 3rd Cornet to eventually play Soprano, by the age of 16 Phil, not content with Sunday practice days with Birdwell would fill out the rest of the day playing with the Territorial Army "Sherwood Rangers Band" in Doncaster, before catching the Bus back to Barnsley to play with "Hoyland Town Band" now Known as "Strata Brass".

During the week Phil also found time to play with "Wentworth Silkstone Colliery Band".

By the age of 17, Phil held the post of Principle Trumpeter with the Sherwood Rangers and played Fanfares to the opening of State Ceromony's  across the U.K.

As National Sevice approached, Phil joined the 17/21 Lancers at Catterick as a Bandsman.  During service in Germany it was brought to his attention that "The Band of the Royal Marines" were recruiting and after taking an audition, Phil found himself part of this famous band, touring most of the far East and Europe.

After Army Service, Phil continued his Band career with "Barrow Colliery" and Championship Section "Carlton Main/Frickley", before returning to "Barrow Colliery", and then onto "Old Silkstone" and "Strata Brass" during the 1980's.

During the 80's, Phil's daughter, Victoria, started to show an interest in playing and with this, the seed was sown to the beginnings of Phil's devotion to teaching Brass Band music to youth.  At first with "Barrow Junior Band" and local Schools, then with "Worsbrough Brass".

Worsbrough Brass is now into its 2nd decade with Philip Hallworth as Musical Director, more involved than ever, still teaching beginners, still at the front Conducting, and still finding time to play with "Old Silkstone Band".
